Looking at the amount of recycled products that my family of four generates in a two week period is — quite honestly — embarrassing!  My husband Greg and I are now trying to buy items with less packaging.  For instance, I love the plastic boxed baby greens for salads but I am now buying different salad greens (radicchio, arugula, etc..) in a bunches and making it myself.
 
I really dislike throwing things in the garbage - where does it all go?  My goal is to cut our garbage in half.  This can be accomplished by composting, using the green bin and recycling as much as possible  - but at the same time consuming items that use only recyclable materials.
 
I sometimes get frustrated with all the little plastic toys that my boys (age 3 & 6) have acquired.  When they break they are simply thrown into the garbage.  My babysitter Dana told me about a friend of hers that made a large wreath and hot glued all her kids odd and damaged plastic toys onto it.  What a great idea!

The thing about riding a bike inside is it can get pretty boring; all you’re thinking about is when is this going to be over.  So to amuse myself during my ride, I put on my stepson’s favorite movie Stepbrothers (extremely funny). 

I rode for about 45 mins, did some stretching and then free weights.  It felt really good to accomplish my workout first thing in the morning.  You feel alive, strong and ready to take on what ever challenges the day brings.

I am also setting an example for boys. I grew up in a household with a father who was very strict about composting and re-using.  If my Dad made my lunch for school  - my sandwich would be in a old cereal bag!  He never allowed us to throw away food, plastic wrap or any vegetable/fruit peel or eggshells -  (they would all end up in our garden)  At the time, he used to drive me nuts!  Now I look back and realize how right he was. 

Stay with me as I explore new and easy ways to be “greener” - my first attempt is to address my garbage, green bin and recycling.

The first thing I have to figure out is a plan. I think if I set aside an hour each morning to work out, I will have greater success.  I also want to speak with a trainer to get an idea of how to maximize my routine to get the best results.  Maybe I will pick up a couple of fitness magazines to get me inspried and keep me on track…

If you have any tips on how to fit exercise into a busy schedule, I’d love to hear from you!

With three kids and a full time job getting healthy meals on the table quickly can sometimes be difficult.

My goal this year is to find recipes that my children will eat (always an issue with kids!) that I can prepare and serve quickly and easily. So bring on ideas for me! Lunches are also an issue as they get bored of sandwiches, so I’m looking for some new things to pack them for school as well.

I’ll be testing out some of our own products as well as recipes I find online & from other Moms, and I will let you know how it goes.
