Norm Murray
Biography
TV Host
He may look sweet and innocent, but around here Norm Murray is known as the king of double entendres. He can often put the staging crew, camera operators and even guests into fits of laughter with his quick wit and subtle humour.
Norm was born in Toronto but raised in both Toronto and Trenton, near Kingston, Ontario. His father was Deputy Manager for the DEW Line (Distant Early Warning) radar stations for NORAD which spanned across Canada's Arctic so Norm got to experience many trips to the arctic which he maintains, to this day, is one of the most beautiful areas of Canada. "Every Canadian should see it," says Norm. "It's got a striking beauty that you just can't find anywhere else."
Always dreaming of a career in radio, Norm attended Humber College in Toronto for radio broadcasting but left during his first year. "At that point I decided to take a year off," says Norm, who spent that year working in various undercover and uniformed security jobs. "As a former Private Investigator, even today I still find myself watching people in stores and on the street and I've even caught a couple of shoplifters - I guess old habits just die hard," laughs Norm.
Unable to shake his dreams of radio broadcasting Norm re-entered the Humber College program. Again he left early but this time it was due to a job offer at a country music station in Toronto . "It wasn't an on-air job," explains Norm, "but it was a foot in the door and I just had to take that opportunity when it came my way." It proved to be a good move that soon lead to a variety of on-air positions at radio stations right across Ontario . Anxious to settle down, Norm took a job at a radio station in Newmarket , Ontario . "What I didn't know at the time," laughs Norm, "is that the station was near bankruptcy! In fact, my first paycheque bounced!"
That was back in late 1991, when, coincidentally, "The Canadian Home Shopping Club" was looking for new hosts. "I answered an ad for an on-air host and Betty-Jean hired me." While this was initially just supposed to be a stopover in his radio career, Norm found that he really enjoyed the work and has been here ever since he was hired on February 24th, 1992.
When he's not on air, Norm enjoys doing the "single dad" thing with his two children. "It works out really well," says Norm, "I'm usually on nights so I get to do all the daytime stuff with the kids." Norm also enjoys doing voice-over work, so if you happen to be listening to the arrivals and departures announcements at the Winnipeg train station or you are on hold with American Express and you think you hear Norm talking to you...you're probably right!
Some of Norm’s favourite on-air moments with guests have included interviewing Wayne Gretzky, George Foreman, Bo Derek, Elizabeth Grant, Nick Chavez, Kim Mendelson, Wolfgang Puck, Ivana, the WWF wrestling stars, Rosalie Brown, Tania Kolar and Young and Restless stars Melody Thomas Scott and Jeanne Cooper.
