Happy Halloween from The Shopping Channel!
Happy Halloween!
Yes, with all the festive Halloween activities around here at The Shopping Channel, I got into the fun of things too! In order to transform myself into someone who looks different I went to Salon Zen to have my very noticeable curly hair transformed into silky straight pageant locks. Oliviere is a master at straightening, but the Ojon HairCare products went the extra mile in helping keep my mane manageable and silky smooth.
It was all in fun to become a pageant contestant called MISS BEHAVIN’ . I am always teased about my sauciness off air and my friends and colleagues at The Shopping Channel all agreed that it was an appropriate costume. To get in the mood, I had to watch Rob Zombie’s take on HALLOWEEN, the story of Michael Myers and how he came to be the scary monster he is….I jumped a few times! Honestly, when I woke the next day to head to work, I thought, “If I see Michael Myers outside my door on the street….I won’t be at work today!!”….well, I made it.
Whether you are out for Halloween or stay in to deliver the treats- I hope you have a BOO-tiful night!

O on the Go: Toughie meets girly
The weekday can be stressful for anyone. In fact, even weekends can be stressful too! So what’s a girl to do when she has all that pent-up energy and wants to channel it into something that’s a little on the “tough girl” side? Well, I would suggest one of my favourite places in Toronto, Flirty Girl Fitness! Flirty what? Tough and girlie at the same time? Is it possible? YES!
Flirty Girl Fitness is in the heart of downtown Toronto and offers a wide range of classes for ages 18 and up. Oprah Winfrey has even plugged the Flirty Girl Fitness in Chicago!! I decided to head down for a one on one with boxing intructor Tara who has some pretty impressive pipes that go along with the incredible jabs and hooks that she can throw. Of course, I always wear my MIO Heart Rate Monitor from The Shopping Channel when I am working out so I can keep my heart rate up and count the calories I am burning at the same time. I would advise picking one up if you are new to working out or a fitness nut like myself- it helps me challenge myself and the boxing was no exception. Some days even the nicest of nice want to throw down and Flirty Girl Fitness is a safe, fun and effective way to blow off some steam and its exclusive to WOMEN!
Love,

Oily? Dry? Normal? Determining your skin type tips from Scott Vincent Borba
A question I hear often is “How do I determine my skin type?” After all, this is a question that needs to be asked and answered when you desire healthy, youthful and glowing skin.
There are several easy things you can look at to determine your skin type. If your forehead and nose tend to get shinier later in the day, and your cheeks and chin look dry you have a classic t-zone, combination skin. If you tend to flake and look dry you are most likely a dry skin type.
Normal skin is skin that doesn’t get too oily or too dry. A good test you can use is to pat a tissue on your face and look at the amount of oil and sweat that comes off. The pattern on the tissue and the amount of moisture collected is usually a good indication of your skin type.
Have your own skincare question? Tune into The Shopping Channel on Friday for my BORBA Skincare shows. From deep-wrinkle fighting formulations to lip balms with nutraceutical benefits, I’ll have an exciting line-up that will change the way you think about skincare.
See you Friday,
Scott-Vincent Borba

Small seasonal updates for your home
When the seasons change, its not just fashion that needs updating. Home designers also focus on a rich, warmer palette. We know it’s not likely that you’re going to redecorate your whole house every season, but there are some small changes you can make to bring that warmth to your house, without the expense of a complete redecoration project.
(1) Paint
If you have a neutral space, why not add some punch with an accent wall? Paint is the least expensive way to create a dramatic impact. And while we love open, airy spaces in summer, in winter people want warmth and coziness. A single wall in a rich deep tone can help create that cozy atmosphere.
(2) Lighting
During those long summer evenings, you may not have needed much lighting in your rooms. But it will soon be dark by 6 o’clock and you’ll definitely have the lights on more times than not. Make sure you have a variety of light sources in a room (sconces, table lamps, floor lamps and overhead lighting) and in work spaces, ensure you have task lighting. If you have not done so already, change all your bulbs to CFLs for greater energy efficiency.
(3) Slipcovers, cushions & throws
Even if you’re not looking to invest in new upholstery, you can update the look of your sofa with a slipcover. They’re removable and washable, so you’ll have no worries when you spill that hot cocoa!
I love nothing better than coming home after work, running a bath and curling up on my sofa in my PJs with a throw and the new season of my favourite show. It’s easy to update your room by simply adding a throw pillow here and there and a soft, luxurious throw.
Sure Fit Embassy Chestnut Slipcover, Cable Chenille Throw, Chatelaine Home Faux Cashmere Throw, Sure Fit Vintage Brick Cushion
(4) Accessories
You don’t have to keep everything out at once. Even in my small apartment, I put away some accessories and rotate objects season-to-season. You’ll be amazed how much more you appreciate your possessions when you move them around or put them away for a short while. When they’re out, in the same spot, for too long, you simply become blind to them.
In Fall, I like to fill vases with branches and create autumnal arrangements using natural accents like pine cones, dried corn, ornamental gourds or pumpkins. Candlelight goes hand in hand with winter nights and I love a fragrant candle to conjure a warm atmosphere. Of course, never leave candles burning unattended.

October is Child Abuse Prevention Month
October is “Go Purple for Prevention Month“. The prevention of child abuse in all forms is a cause that is near and dear to me. One that does not have a cure that requires millions of dollars in research, but one that costs us time in our day-to-day lives. It’s about being aware of what goes on around us, in our homes, families and neighborhoods. I chose to get involved with the cause based on my own personal experience and decided to speak up for the sake of all children. Their innocence is something so valuable and once it has been taken away from them, they can never get it back and they are never the same again. Helping makes a difference.
As part of my commitment, I travelled back to my hometown of Belleville, Ontario and went back to an organization I was a part of from the age of 14-19 yrs of age. The Hastings Children’s Aid Society recently held a Use Your Voice Challenge to help with raising awareness and all Children’s Aid Societies took part across Canada. You can create your own event next year on October 1. Think of how that would sound, millions of people all over the world shouting out “Kids Shouldn’t Have to Live with Abuse!” It’s a great message to shout out from the top of your lungs and it felt good for me to take part. Watch a video of me belting it out loud & proud!
Every year the BOOST FOR KIDS organization offers programs and services to more than 1000 children, youth and their families to prevent abuse or provide support when abuse or violence has occurred. They are dedicated to the promotion of healthy children, youth, families and communities. It really is something we can all do together on a day to day basis, watching out for one another and watching out for our youth. As part of their fundraising efforts, they sell & promote the “BOOST Bracelet”. Each coloured bead in this special bracelet tells the story of a child who is a survivor of abuse. Black symbolizes dark times; Purple represents all forms of abuse; Green stands for BOOST; Colourful Beads represents the programs at BOOST; the Heart Charm symbolizes nurturing and caring support; and the Butterfly Charm symbolizes a renewal of life.
If you’re interested in finding out more about these bracelets, and how to order, visit the BOOST FOR KIDS web site. If you happen to see me about the city of Toronto, you can be sure I will have these bracelets on me and you can lend your support instantly!
